SLOTH #10: MIRROR MIRROR

SLOTH Presents MIRROR MIRROR Live at The Parkside Lounge

APRIL 18 2025

Doors at 6PM / Show at 7PM

TICKETS $12

What do you see when you catch your reflection — truth or illusion? A fleeting glance can reveal desire, envy, admiration, or something altogether unexpected. Do you see yourself, or someone you long to be? Or has another’s reflection revealed something about you? Sometimes, a reflection doesn’t just show us who we are but who we are becoming. Tell us a story about the mirrors that have startled, seduced, or shaped you.

Doors open at 6:00 and stories begin around 7:00pm. Sharers and listeners are all welcome! No story is required to come and enjoy the scene. To sustain our work, there is a $12 entry fee, but no one will be turned away for lack of funds.

On the fence about telling a story? We're here to help you develop it for primetime! Reach out to one of our gracious and beautiful hosts to brainstorm and refine. We'd love to get a glimpse of your inner worlds.

What are SLOTH events?
The SLOTH is our queer gathering for friends to share stories inspired by our selected themes. Come to listen or come to tell. We welcome authentic and true(ish) tales, comedy, poetry, music, and any creative form you can put into a compelling 5-minute share.

Readings at Parkside: Cedar Sigo

Readings at Parkside:
Cedar Sigo

The Parkside Lounge
Sunday, April 27th, 4pm

Cedar Sigo's latest poetry collection, Siren of Atlantis, is an introspective odyssey of remarkable poetic and personal resonance.

Here are poems that speak to Sigo's profound experience of learning to write again after suffering a stroke in 2022. In creating this work, the author retraces poetic sources and reexamines style and tone, using a variety of compositional techniques to renegotiate what is at stake in the work. There is a joy in this collection, as Sigo allows us to bear witness to the rediscovery of language, imparting the work with a new and dramatic clarity, for the poet and ultimately for the reader as well.

Cedar Sigo is a poet and member of the Suquamish Nation. He studied at The Jack Kerouac School of Disembodied Poetics at the Naropa Institute. He is the author of endless books and pamphlets of poetry, including All This Time (Wave Books, 2021), Stranger in Town (City Lights, 2010), Expensive Magic (House Press, 2008), two editions of Selected Writings (Ugly Duckling Presse, 2003 and 2005) and most recently Siren of Atlantis (Wave Books, 2025). In 2022 he received a grants to artist’s award from The Foundation for Contemporary Arts. He has taught all over the country including The University of Washington, Bard College, Washington University, Naropa University and The Institute of American Indian Arts. He lives in Lofall, Washington.

SLOTH Shop: Queer Storytelling Workshop

Got a story brewing but not quite ready for the mic? SLOTH SHOP is your space to tinker, test, and trade ideas with fellow storytellers. Whether you’re fine-tuning for the next open mic, shaping a personal project, or just need a spark to get started, bring your rough drafts, half-baked ideas, or even a blank page.

Together, we’ll learn how to give (and take) constructive critique, explore the art of collaborative storytelling, and build stronger creative bonds in our community. No pressure, just play.

NEXT THEME: PRIDE & PREJUDICE

What does it mean to embrace your queerness in a world that often judges you for it? How have you navigated the tension between your pride and the prejudice you overcome? Whether it’s a story of defying expectations, challenging stereotypes, or reclaiming power, we want to hear how you’ve shaped your queer path. Come share your truth, laugh at the absurdities, and explore the complexity of love, identity, and belonging in a world that is always trying to label you.

WHAT ARE SLOTH EVENTS?

Slow down and listen in. THE SLOTH is our queer gathering for friends to share and shape stories inspired by our selected themes. Come to listen or come to tell. We welcome authentic tales, comedy, poetry, music, and any creative form you can put into compelling 5-minute shares.

Deep Listening VIII: Ka Baird, Gabby Fluke-Mogul, Nick Hallett, Daniel Klag

Deep Listening VIII: Ka Baird, Gabby Fluke-Mogul, Nick Hallett, Daniel Klag Live at The Parkside Lounge

May 15 2025

Doors at 6:30 / Show at 7pm

Students over 21 with ID $5  / Advance $10 / Door $15

Deep Listening returns with its eighth and final iteration at @the_parkside_lounge_nyc featuring three sets of live experimental performance from Ka Baird (@sapropelicpycnic) with gabby fluke-mogul (@flukemogul), Nick Hallett (@nick_hallett), and Daniel Klag (@danielklag). Presented by Kevin Kenkel (@kevinkenkel).

The evening will also feature a popup shop from our friends at @soaplibrary Soap Library!

Follow @deeeeplistening_nyc to stay up to date on future events and see clips or photos from past shows.

Ka Baird is a performer, sound artist, musician and composer based in New York City. They are known for their live performances which include extended voice and microphone techniques combined with electronics and psychoacoustic interplay of flutes and other woodwinds. They create a present tense sound with a vigorous, ritualistic delivery that seeks extreme release through physical exertion and psychic extension. They have worked/collaborated with many other musicians, artists, filmmakers and choreographers, both in structured compositions and in their dedicated practice of improvisation and interdisciplinary work.

https://www.kabaird.com/

gabby fluke-mogul is a Brooklyn-based violinist, improviser, composer, educator, organizer, and doula.

Weaving within experimental threads of improvised musics, their playing has been described as “embodied, visceral and virtuosic” and “the most striking sound in improvised music in years”. On their 2022 solo release from Relative Pitch Records, Best of Jazz notes, "LOVE SONGS is graspable within its very first seconds of play. It has rare density...infinitely beautiful and magnificently poignant."

http://www.flukemogul.com

Nick Hallett is a New York based musician, artist, and organizer.  Their experimental voice-based practice is rooted in play with non-language, song, and electronics.  Known as an “invaluable” (New Yorker) impresario and collaborator to visual artists and choreographers, their music has been presented at MoMA, Park Avenue Armory, BAM, the Whitney, New Museum, The Kitchen, PERFORMA, Hayden Planetarium, Roulette, ISSUE Project Room, Danspace, and many other institutional and commercial spaces.  They have sung in works by Anthony Braxton, Meredith Monk, and Susie Ibarra.  Not generally known as a solo performer, for Deep Listening, Nick is making something completely new.
https://www.gutcity.com/

Daniel Klag constructs ambient audio sketches from isolated samples of acoustic and electric instruments, field recordings, and other found sounds. His output spans multiple labels including Muzan Editions, Patient Sounds, Constellation Tatsu, AMDISCS, and Soap Library. His latest album, Facsimile, takes inspiration from Enrique Vila-Matas’ A Brief History of Portable Literature, a novella presenting the fictional history of a secret society of writers and artists whose work is intentionally small and lightweight. Facsimile was recorded in small spaces (hotel rooms, train cars, an NYC apartment) using only portable battery-powered devices.

www.danielklag.com

Kevin Kenkel is a Brooklyn-based composer and performer whose most recent album “Break All The Bones in Your Heart” was released by Soap Library in June 2024. His music comprises elegiac compositions for analog synthesizers and sampler, filled with pathos, heady atmospheres of longing and loneliness, unanswered calls, and missed connections. Additionally, he plays synthesizers and electronics with the performance artist Christeene, with recent performances in Oslo, Rome, Berlin, and London. Kevin curates Deep Listening, a bi-monthly evening of experimental electronics at Parkside Lounge in NYC’s Lower East Side. He has collaborated with Colin Self, Adam Tendler, Eve Essex, and Das Audit as a drummer and synthesist.

Readings at Parkside: Lynne TILLMAN: THRILLED TO DEATH

From award-winning novelist and cultural critic Lynne Tillman, Thrilled to Death is a collection of selected stories across the career of America’s most audacious writer —

Among the vanguard of American literary writers, Lynne Tillman’s work has defied categorization throughout her legendary career—a singular body of work that both redefined and reimagined the short story form entirely.

Curated by the author, Thrilled to Death is the definitive entry point for both established fans and new readers alike. These selected stories collect a bold, playful, and eclectic ensemble of Tillman’s Borgesian fictions that span decades and traverse themes of sex, death, memory, and anxiety.

With argumentative wit, Tillman’s meditations and reflections on art, politics, and culture are animated by deliciously paradoxical characters who desire and fret in turn, and who are imbued with searing intelligence and dolorous ambivalence. Describing Tillman’s writing, Colm Tóibín says: “Her style has both tone and undertone; it attempts to register the impossibility of saying very much, but it insists on the right to say a little. So what is essential is the voice itself, its ways of knowing and unknowing.”

In this darke and macabre year of 2025, a most spectacular astral occasion will thankfully take place on SUNDAY MARCH 16th at 8:00pm when CLAYWOMAN and CHRISTEENE reunite for A NIGHT INSIDE...an intimate evening of shared thoughts and artistic expressions. Like two oracles from opposite ends of the galaxy, they bring you their crusty pearls of wisdom and dusty volumes of experience along with our very special guests NATH ANN CARRERA & MORGAN BASSICHIS!  Join them along with their stern sidekick, JUDITH, all at THE PARKSIDE LOUNGE, as they explore new and uncharted realms together!

Please purchase tickets in advance to assure passage to this monumental affair.

Seating is very limited!
